The Shoals

There are four cities in the northwest corner of Alabama - Florence, Sheffield, Muscle Shoals and Tuscumbia - that make up the area known as the Shoals. With a population of more than 150,000, we're big enough to have the cultural, educational, shopping and medical facilities you'd expect from a larger city - but we still enjoy a relaxed, safe style of life.

For an area this size, the Shoals has a lot of wonderful things usually found in larger cities. A symphony - a University - world-class schools, libraries, medical facilities and shopping. We're a regional shopping and medical center, drawing from sixty miles in every direction. We enjoy four distinct but gentle seasons, and we do a lot of things outdoors, whether in our parks, on our walking and biking trails, or on the river itself. We have festivals and museums and art shows and Muscle Shoals Music - and there's always something going on in the Shoals!

There are also a lot of things you will NOT find in the Shoals, that you might expect to find in a larger city. We don't have much crime - in fact, we are consistently ranked as one of the safest places in the country to live. We don't have high real estate prices - our homes are priced below the state median and well below the national average. We don't have high property taxes - ours are the lowest in the country. We don't have traffic problems, even though we are served by excellent highways in all directions. These are things you won't find here in the Shoals, but we don't mind - this is a friendly, relaxed and safe place to live.
